‘All three parties have submitted their verified list of candidates. Elections will be held,’ says the current Student Council chair, Wijnand Fredriks.

The elections were cancelled last year due to a lack of interest: eleven students were up for election, while there were twelve seats to be filled. A twelfth candidate was eventually found so that all the seats could be filled, but elections were unnecessary.

This year, more than twelve candidates have made themselves available, which means elections will be held. Fredriks: ‘Student awareness of the council has dropped since the pandemic, but during the election week, everyone on campus can see who we are and what we do. That visibility is important; students must know where to find us in order for us to represent them properly.’

Representation

The elections remind students that the council that represents them can influence decision-making processes at the university, Fredriks states. ‘They see that there are people representing them. There are different parties with different ideas and a range of candidates. The student votes that are cast during these elections determine how the seats in the Student Council are distributed this upcoming academic year. What matters to you as a student, and which candidate do you feel is best suited to represent your interests? Students must consider this and cast their ballot during the election week.’

This year’s Student Council elections are to take place from Monday, 27 May to and including Thursday, 30 May. All students will be informed about the elections through their WUR e-mail account.
