A power cabinet between the NPEC and Klima buildings caught fire this morning at seven-thirty. The fire caused excessive smoke. Although the smoke caused no damage, the power outage may negatively affect the research being conducted in the buildings.

The fire was extinguished rapidly, and environmental damage was checked. There appears to be none. ‘We are now checking the damage inside’, says a WUR spokesperson. ‘A Plant Science Group crisis-coordination team is currently investigating the situation in the surrounding buildings. They are identifying what research was affected by the power outage and what steps can be taken to solve issues. The extent of the damage will become apparent in the course of the day.’

The power cabinet is no longer fit for use. It is broken, the spokesperson asserts. Grid operator Liander will repair the cabinet. Unifarm employees are offered shelter in Radix, where they are briefed on the developments.
