Participants will develop and implement food system innovations within their own environment. WUR organises the Food Systems Innovation Challenge in collaboration with seven universities from the global south and the Netherlands Food Partnership. The challenge will start in April 2024 and continue until September.

Each university will contribute two teams. In addition to Wageningen, teams from universities in Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Brazil, Surinam, and Nepal will compete. The innovative ideas must be sustainable, economically viable and scalable. The degree of impact an innovation can deliver is also considered.

The student projects must not merely contribute to a world without hunger but also include one of the following themes: ecological sustainability, healthy nutrition and social inclusion.

Once the challenge is completed, the participant will be able to further develop their project in the Youth Food Lab, an incubator for start-ups within the domain of sustainable food systems. The Youth Food Lab is an initiative by WUR, the World Food Forum and the international student association IAAS.
