The internationally renowned Dutch Design (DDW) week is to start again in Eindhoven on 21 October. WUR contributes in various ways and in various locations. A summary of WUR’s contribution for those unable to visit the event will be offered in Impulse on 13 November by means of a Design Dialogue.

4TU Design United, the design collaboration between the four technical universities in the Netherlands (4TU), is present in the large design exhibition in the Klok building, the very heart of the Dutch Design Week. Like the previous year, this design group focuses on several appealing examples of design-driven research or education, which includes several WUR projects.

The WUR projects that were selected for this year’s exhibition are Plant Pixel, Re-designing Rivers and Binderless Boards. Plant Pixel is a project by PhD candidate Maricruz Solera Jimenez and chairholder Sandra Lenzholzer (Landscape Architecture and Spatial Planning): A concept based on rock faces through which plant growth and urban construction can go hand in hand. Re-designing Rivers is a project by PhD candidate Catalina Rey-Hernández (Water Resources Management Group), which shows how an alternative approach to making maps (counter-mapping) unlocks a different form of experiencing and getting to know areas. She applied the method to the Yanunay River in Ecuador. Binderless Boards is a study on material made of pure lignocellulose, without biorefinery and without adding adhesives or chemicals. The study is conducted by PhD candidate Gijs van Erven and researcher Edwin Keijsers (BBP Biorefinery & Sustainable Value Chain). The latter also contributed to the materials used in last year’s DDW exhibition of protein transition musical instruments by sound artist Remco de Kluizenaar.

Dialogue sessions

In the MicroLab, near the Klok building, 4TU Design United organises a daily dialogue on a particular pressing design topic. Partially as a calling card to show what universities are working on, but also to promote community forming with professionals from the relevant field.

The dialogues are interactive, open sessions in which a variety of art and interactive methods are used to shine a new light on the daily topic. For example, during the session on Politics of Design (Monday, with Gert Jan Veldwisch of Water Resource Management representing WUR), a theatre producer presents the interlude. In the dialogue Climate Futures Now! (Tuesday, with WUR Games hub coordinator Federico Andreotti), the audience can participate through a serious game developed by  WUR-master students with chair holder Hannah van Zanten (Farm Systems Ecology Group). A third dialogue to which WUR contributes is More than Human, with, among others, bio-ethicist Clemens Driessen.

Food sciences

Finally, WUR is also present during the DDW in and around the Evoluon. On Saturday and Sunday during the event, the ‘Great Food Dilemma’ food experiment by Sigrid Wertheim-Heck, previously shown at the Lowlands festival, takes place. Additionally, Wieger Wamelink’s Mars project is featured as part of the Evoluon exhibition ‘Space farming: the future of food’.

Eindhoven or Impulse

The Dutch Design Week takes place from 21 to and including 29 October in various locations in Eindhoven. The event also aims at an international audience. Many parts of the programme are English-spoken or bilingual. This also applies to the dialogues, and WUR students and employees are more than welcome to join. Participation is free of charge, but a DDW-ticket is required, and participants must register.

Are you interested but lack the time or money to go to Eindhoven? The Wageningen contributors to the DDW organise a Design Dialogue in Impulse on 13 November. Details on the lunch event will follow as they become available.
