Now a course will start on campus on 22 February. In five evenings, you will learn the basics of Dutch sign language.

The course is organized by the Talking Hands Foundation, a charity that helps people who are deaf and hard of hearing in Uganda. ‘The course costs 40 euros, half of which goes to our foundation,’ says Carlijn Stam, an International Development Studies Master’s student and a member of the Talking Hands board. ‘We use that money to arrange practical training, for example in woodwork or making textiles, for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. We also pay for lessons in education for the deaf and we organize sign language courses for the children’s families.’

The course is for students and staff and is in Dutch. Stam: ‘Each country has its own sign language, although there are similarities. This course is specifically about the Dutch sign language, but we want to organize a course on the English variant another time.’

You can still register for the course; just send an email to info@talking-hands.nl.
