A sibling for the wet garden near Atlas: the area between Orion and Omnia is being redesigned. This leads to much digging and moving of soil. The existing walk of fame will disappear.

One of the most noticeable aspects of the redesign is the removal of the cauldrons. The seven steel pots have been relocated to a spot west of Atlas. This redesign occurs just seven years after the construction of the “amphitheatre” in the same spot. The amphitheatre is a horseshoe-shaped mound constructed from sand extracted during Orion’s building. It has, however, never actually been used as an amphitheatre. A similar construction near Impulse rendered it redundant.

Students

According to campus development experts at Facilities and Services, the development of the business strip and Omnia called for an update of the terrain. To this end, they enlisted the skills and expertise of Landscape Architecture students. Students Thamar Zeinstra and Raidun Schott made the design, which is inspired by the Netherlands om 2120 project.

NL 2120 is a future perspective on what the Netherlands might look like one century from today, released by WUR researchers. The main point of departure is that landscapes are designed based on the already present qualities of the landscape. In this design, that means the existing knoll and the seepage water.

Biking fountains

The students describe the result as a ‘gradient-rich pattern of lines, in which elevations and depressions and wet and dry are the basis for a welcoming new world’. This new world also contains two biking fountains that are activated by cycling. What that is like in reality will soon be revealed.

There is no room for the cauldrons in the new garden. The Walk of Fame will also disappear. The stone path that was to commemorate special occasions never really took off. The tiles will be relocated to the Impulse terrace. The benches, including the 100 Years WUR commemorative bench, will be included in the new garden.
