Gate to protect Lumen garden

The Lumen garden has been gated. The fencing is to keep unwanted visitors out.

It is with a heavy heart that the garden committee took this decision. But, there is no option, says spokesperson Wieger Wamelink. To protect the vulnerable plants from scoundrels not willing to adhere to the rules. ‘Illegal fishers, youths cruising around on the bicycles, students who sit atop the mounds. They even sit right next to the signs saying this is prohibited.’

Sheep fence

This has been going on for some time. A visit to a nature garden opened Wamelink’s eyes. ‘There, I saw how beautiful a garden can be and how demolished our garden now is.’ The committee thus resolved to place a sheep fence around it. Not to keep sheep in, but (some) people out.

Accessible

Wamelink emphasises that the garden will remain open to everyone. ‘But we don’t want to police it all the time.’ New signs detailing the rules will be posted at the entrance. Fishing, for example, is prohibited. As is going off-trail. Among others, several (rare) orchids grow in the grass.
