Linda Klunder (25), a master’s student Management, Economics and Consumer Studies is co-founder of Kumasi Drinks. This company buys cocoa pulp (to date, a waste product) from cocoa farmers and turns it into fruit juice. ‘Thus, the cocoa farmer can monetise a waste product, which increases their income as well as contributing to preventing food waste.’

Klunder is thrilled with the second place. ‘Great! We will do wonderful things with the award money.’ They plan to produce a hundred thousand cocoa beverages in 2021. The drink is currently available in fifteen chocolate speciality stores. ‘At the start of 2021 we want to scale up to larger shops, and we aim to have our product in supermarkets by 2022.’

Falafval

The winner of the World Award was DeWarmte. This company aims to heat households by reclaiming the warmth in the wastewater. Forest Wool, a company that produced textiles from pine needles, came in third. The audience prize went to Falafval, a business that uses vegetable waste streams to make falafel.
