Unemployed alarm clock

Last week, it was time for a new alarm clock—a real one. So far, I used my phone -in addition to thousands of other things- to wake me. The first few notes of U2’s ‘Song for Someone’,  have now been replaced by the classic ‘beep beep’.

I started the days with a quick scroll through the news, mainly consisting of seemingly endless COVID-19 statistics. It seems ages ago. As soon as the measures were eased, there was room for other things that are happening in the world, from anti-corona to anti-racism. All the good, and all the unexplainable, wonderfully mixed together. Before breakfast, I was already thinking about everything that was going on in the world.

My sense of time is still stuck somewhere mid-April

Time flies. What I did on Tuesday, may as well have been a month ago. Wait. Is it mid-June already? The rain of the past weeks makes it feel like a Dutch summer, but my sense of time is still stuck somewhere mid-April. The summer vacation set to start in two weeks almost catches me by surprise. And, whatever I may read in the papers this morning, my day will most likely be similar to yesterday. Whether this rut will disappear after the summer vacation, remains to be seen.

I hope in September we will be able to ask teachers questions ‘in real life’

All students are studying at home, or at ‘homehome’. No more overcrowded trains. No more running to catch the bus. That is an advantage. It also saves a lot of money. But I do hope we will be able to go to the campus again in September. That we will have classes together and are able to ask teachers questions ‘in real life’. I hope I have to get somewhere on time next year. That way, my new alarm clock will have something to do.
