After almost a year and a half of anonymously making jokes about the university and student life, the administrator of the Instagram account WURmemes will step out of the shadows this Thursday. During the Summervibes festival on campus, it will be revealed who is behind the account – and who will be the successor.
The timing is no coincidence. The administrator of the popular meme page almost finished their bachelor’s degree and is passing on the baton. ‘I have just started the last official course of my bachelor,’ says the admin. ‘I don’t have any plans after that yet. Maybe I’ll end up doing a master’s degree in Wageningen, or somewhere else entirely.’
So it’s time to reveal who is behind the meme account. From the posts on the account and the rumour mill, it was already clear that the administrator is an international bachelor’s student. But few people know more than that. ‘The plan is to show up at Summervibes in an inflatable suit and then reveal who I am with a game.’ According to an earlier post, that will be “either the highlight of my student life or the most awkward moment ever.” ‘I am aware that not everyone in the audience will know exactly what it is about; I have 6,000 followers. I don’t take it too seriously.’
Not a full-time job
The successor will also be on stage – but will remain anonymous. ‘The point is that you don’t know who’s behind it, that’s what makes it fun.’ Can the new admin handle the task? ‘How much time I spend on the account varies greatly; it’s definitely not a full-time job. We’ve discussed what’s involved and I’m feelingconfident.’
After Summervibes, there will be a WURmemes afterparty in the Bunker, with a dress code. “The idea is that people come dressed as their favourite meme. Bonus points if it’s one of my memes.”
