Local actions replace national strike

Wageningen organises a lunch walk-out.
Flyers for Juni 10. The national education campaign day has been canceled due to the strikes at NS.

Today’s national strike against education cuts has been called off. However, there will be local actions – in Wageningen, a lunch walk-out with personal stories about the cuts.

Due to an extension of the strike by NS (Dutch Railways) staff, there will be no trains running throughout the country on Tuesday. The unions are therefore postponing the announced education action day until the fall. ‘We will come up with a new action after the summer, closer to the elections,’ writes the coalition (FNV, WOinActie, AOb, LSVb, and 0.7) in a joint statement in which they also express their solidarity with the train strikers. ‘Striking hurts, that’s part of it. This time it’s our turn.’

The unions are not calling off the strike, which means that employees still have the right and the opportunity to walk off the job. In Wageningen, the WUR action committee has come up with an alternative strike action: the lunch walkout.

‘With this action, we want to make tangible the calm before the storm that many of us are experiencing,’ writes the action committee. ‘The workload is increasing, while more and more colleagues are losing their jobs. This walkout is also a lunch walk in which taking a break is a small form of resistance. Because very soon we will have much less of that peace and quiet.’

The action committee asks participants in the walkout to gather at 12:00 noon at the statue of Atlas. They will then walk together across the campus. The procession will stop at various buildings to share personal stories about the consequences of the budget cuts and the increasing workload.
