The second nominee for the annual Teacher of the Year Award is known: university teacher Forest ecology and forest management Ute Sass-Klaassen.

Resource surprised Sass-Klaassen in her room in Lumen. ‘I get to participate in The Voice?’ the teacher of the courses such as Forest resources and sustainable forest management systems joked when she saw the silver envelope.

Sass-Klaasssen was nominated multiple times for the Teacher of the Year Award, but did not manage to take the prize back home. Nevertheless also the new nomination was received with joy. ‘I find it an honour to be named as one of the five best teachers.’ She did emphasize that teaching is teamwork. ‘Actually it is strange that there is only one Teacher of the Year. There is not one type of excellent education, it is really diverse. I would love it if a team was chosen as Teacher of the Year.’

The jury of Teacher of the Year praises Sass-Klaassen because she knows exactly how to connect to the students. She knows her teachers well and approaches everyone in a different manner. Sass-Klaassen thinks that students appreciate her involvement. ‘Students want to invest in their study when they see that their teacher also does so. I spend a lot of time in the preparation of my lessons, just like my colleagues.’

The coming days Resource will also announce the other four nominees for the Teacher of the Year Award 2016. Last week it was announced that André van Lammeren is in the race to become best teacher of 2016.
