Every year volunteers of the Alpe d’HuZes attempt to bike the famous Alp six times in one day. In this way they raise money to finance research on cancer.

This year six employees of Wageningen UR are participating, led by Herman Vermeer. They are doing this under the name of Big Challenge, a team of two hundred people from the livestock sector. The Wageningen team wants to raise 30 thousand euro of which about 15 thousand has already been collected.

The team is calling employees of Wageningen UR to donate their leave hours. They can do this by filling in a form. The donated net wage can then been subtracted from taxes as a donation.

For a long time it was unclear if a Wageningen team would join the Alpe d’HuZes at all. Now they are working hard on fundraising. Participant Wilfred Hoefakker: ‘We are thinking of a bicycle tour for employees and students.’ And there are also ideas for a sports day. ‘But we expect more enthusiasm once it is 18 to 22 degrees outside instead of 7.’

The donation of leave hours for charity has been used before within Wageningen UR. In this manner employees of the CVI could be sent to West-Africa in the fight against Ebola, thanks to the donated hours of their colleagues. Last years the Alpe d’HuZes also collected money in this manner, says Vermeer, but this years they will emphasize this recruitment method.
