Free access to Dutch newspapers for students

Initiative (also) aims to lower the barrier to quality journalism.

Publishing company DPG Media is offering students a free (digital) subscription to its newspapers. DPG explains this step by saying that it aims to make reliable news more accessible to 16- to 25-year-olds – although the acquisition of future subscribers is undoubtedly also a motivation.

‘The majority of young people mainly encounter news via social media. That environment is full of fake news, which young people have been shown to find difficult or even impossible to distinguish from facts,’ said DPG CEO Erik Roddenhof in a message on Nu.nl, also a DPG publication. ‘With this initiative, we hope to lower the barrier to quality journalism.’ Of course, Resource supports this journalistic motivation.

Other options

Other publishers also offer students free subscriptions, such as the investigative platform Follow the Money (in Dutch). In addition, via WUR Library Search, various newspapers and trade journals (both Dutch and international) can be accessed free of charge by WUR staff and students.

The DPG offer gives students access to the Dutch newspapers de Volkskrant, Trouw, Het Parool, AD, Brabants Dagblad, Eindhovens Dagblad, Tubantia, BN DeStem, PZC, De Stentor, and De Gelderlander. Resource has a journalistic partnership with the latter.
